6 Steps to Choosing Hotel Curtains

Quick Preview of the 6 Steps to Buying Curtains for Your Hotel

Choosing Hotel Curtains can help us see the various options available to hotel owners who want to improve the appearance of their hotel windows and what the most important steps are to ensure the best possible result.

STEP 1. Make sure you have taken the correct measurements of the windows

A huge mistake that is made all too often is that the staff or management team does not take the time to do a quality survey of the space. The old adage «measure two, cut one» would apply here. Make sure you measure all the options and record the information clearly.

Measurement is where most projects fail and this is usually discovered after the materials have been purchased or manufactured and are ready for installation. It is common for products that have been measured incorrectly to require re-configuration or adjustment.

Curtains have an added advantage when measured for a curtain rod, if the measurement is larger, the curtains have a tolerance as there will be fullness. This means you can pull the curtains further or when using capsule curtains you will have more creases on the curtain rod.

With drop blinds or curtains, there is almost no tolerance, although it is better if they are a little longer, as the ruffled look of the curtains will look older, although in a modern room it may look strange.

Rule of thumb when measuring a window.

***** Go 15cm further from each side of the window recess – so 30cm in total

*** Go 15cm above the window and finish at the desired length.

STEP 2. Selecting the room image

Look at different rooms that you like and understand what you need to do to get the best finish and what people expect from your accommodation. For example, a 4 star hotel should have a very high level of blackout. So, you should make sure that the curtains have 3 layers of blackout and minimal light leakage around the installation whether they are blinds or curtains or a mix of both. For the highest level of blackout try curtains over roman blinds.

Please note that Roman blinds will wear out faster than curtains as the rods and stitching are subject to a great deal of stress and can even break on larger Roman blinds. When using Direct Fabrics Roman blinds, we provide you with a child-safe chain mechanism.

You also need to be aware of the strength of different curtain rod installations and how the weight is distributed on them, as typically a curtain rod will have fewer supports than a rail and they also have a corner in the support, which if pulled will loosen and come off the wall.

STEP 3. Make sure you buy flame retardant upholstery fabrics

In the UK, Europe and America, commercial premises are required to have flame retardant fabrics that are certified to the required standards. This means that you need to work with a furnishing company that has knowledge of the market and can provide curtains and fabrics that comply with BS5867 in the UK, NFPA in America and M1 and B1 in Europe.

This doesn’t have to limit your options, it just means that «Safety always comes first.» It’s paramount when running a hotel to know that you’re operating legally and can uphold your insurance policies. There’s nothing worse than thinking you’re operating with substandard window dressing, especially with so many high-profile events that have ended in tragedy.

Flame retardant fabric upholstery has thousands of fabric options, ranging from Dimouts, Blackouts/Prints/Wovens/Voiles and more.

Velona.gr offers a wide variety and can source fabrics from all over the world.

STEP 4. Choosing a color palette and design

Choosing a hotel room design can be quite complicated. At Velona we see that most of the time hotels prefer to use simple curtains and add color to the room with accessories. This means that rooms do not go out of style quickly. Modern gray colors are very popular in hotel interior design.

STEP 5. Choosing the right manufacturers and the right price

The old saying that you get what you pay for means that you will have a wide variety of prices and for each of them you will get different services.

Higher – Complete interior decoration, including construction and installation

Medium – Online furnishing contract with local coverage. Choose your fabrics online and receive samples, which will be manufactured and installed according to your needs. A perfect example is www.velona.gr

Low – You choose a fabric and assemble the pieces, using a seamstress and fabric suppliers directly from the furnishing supplier or from a local dealer. NOTE – make sure your fabrics comply with the required laws.

STEP 6 – Installation and investment

When it comes to installing in a commercial environment, it is imperative that your curtains and soft furnishings are fitted and fitted to the highest standards. Curtain supports, poles and blinds need to be secure and strong enough to withstand the daily abuse from hotel/guesthouse guests. Guests in a hotel expect everything to work flawlessly or they may ask for discounts or refunds. So the hardware needs to work perfectly without a problem.

Make sure the fasteners are secure and sturdy. Ideally go through the plaster to the back block. Use hardened drill bits to drill into harder blocks and steel.

Once the material is ready and working, it is a good idea to use a SILICON SPRAY to lubricate it so that the glider moves beautifully and with the smoothest strokes.

When adding lining to your curtains, make sure you use metal hooks before pulling and taping all the curtains together. This means you can unfold it and then tape it to the glider on a curtain rod or to the rings on a pole.
